Default Sushii- your thoughts

After seeing the "I am eating sushii right now" thread I was curious about everyone's thoughts on it. It seems like everyone is giving it a swing these days and ranting about it. It is the new bottled water really. I tried it just recently thanks to a man my father does buisness with... he is very good at makign it and tought us how to do it.

My thoughts-

It was good, not great. I enjoyed it, would eat it again should it be presented in front of me but I would not go out of my way to get it and it is not the best thing to happen to my life. Frankly, the main reason I would ever try it again is simply for the exotic nature of it all. It is fairly engaging in terms of eating it, making it, and the fact that you can make a sort of social affair out of it. The taste almost took a backseat to all of this really, considering the fact that I have found myself enjoying a good sandwich more, and sushii seems like more of a hobby or activity than a meal or snack.

One thing I truely DID NOT like was this salmon roe fed to me. It was like pop rocks... fish flavored pop rocks. Not even a mildly fishy flavor, this was the essense of fish flavor. It was almost like tasting low tide at the docks or a nice big bucket of chum compressed into a form that I could gag on in the convenience of my own home.

Those are my thoughts on sushii, what are yours.

I guess it really depends on the chefs that cook it (ha, or well prepare it at least...)

Like at a local chinese restaurant they serve sushi where it's just raw fish. Then they have it to where it has carrots/rice and seasonings on it.

To me the extra carrots and what not add so much flavor to it as well as dipping sauces (sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, stuff like that).

veal is beef for sure man!

Look, I didn't say it is overrated I just said it was a matter of it not being anything special in terms of taste, and that it seems to get its charm from other aspects.

I have had it in lots of forms, just raw fish, I have had it with all sorts of veggies and sauces and roll styles etc. etc. etc. Like I said, I even had it with those grotesque fish eggs.

I was introduced to sashimi first (that's your standard petite filet of raw fish) and sushi later. With sushi, it's a matter of not looking at the separate components but the whole.

With both sushi and sashimi, I will tell you that the freshness and quality of the ingredients makes a HUGE difference. When you have a special type of tuna that tastes like a scallop dipped in butter, presented on a pallet of fragrant, perfectly seasoned rice, that almost melts in your mouth, well... there aren't many foods I've had that reach that level of sublime.

the Japanese have a saying that goes something like....If you eat something for the first time and like it, you will extend you life for 75 days.

Sushi truly is food of the Gods and at all levels. Prep, presentaion, taste, creation, deliverance, environment....

I have found that you either love it to death or can leave it without another thought. If you love it, its a savage love driven by pure lust to have your taste buds satiated at all costs and it comes at a spiritual level. you either feel it or you dont. You know who you are.

If you live in the bay area you MUST go to Blue Ginko, it's the best. Yes, that's where I got my handle.

I like random thoughts about sushii.

I disagree with love it or hate it. I didn't mind it, it was pretty enjoyable. I was a fan of the pickled ginger and sushii sauce (not so much the wasabi) and I loved being able to cram the whole deal in my mouth. It is just that in my case the taste took a bit of a backseat to the whole experience of it, which is what drove me to eat it again and what will ever drive me to eat it.

I would also rather have a cow and a blowtorch though.
